Raphael (his whole name is Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino) was born in 1483. He was an Italian painter during a period known as the High Renaissance. Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael are thought of as the three greatest painters of that time… also 3 of the Ninja Turtles 🙂 Many of his paintings were frescos (paintings on walls – like Michelangelo) in the Vatican, where the Pope lives. He also painted a lot of portraits of rich and famous people in Italy. When he was only 26 years old he was known as one of the most famous painters in Italy! One of my favorite paintings by Raphael is Saint George and the Dragon. There is a Lego video on YouTube below the painting that tells the story of Saint George and the dragon. The painting is called a cabinet painting because it is so small, only 11.2 inches × 8.5 inches. Talking about small, I think it’s pretty funny that the dragon in the painting is so small! This is one of Raphael’s paintings that is actually in the United States. It is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
